What Are Watchlists?

Watchlists are your personalized collections of stocks you want to monitor. Instead of searching for each company individually, watchlists let you track all activity across your focus universe in one place.

What you can track per watchlist:

  • All 8-K company actions for watchlist stocks
  • All insider Form 4 transactions for watchlist stocks
  • Opportunity score changes
  • Combined activity feed showing everything relevant

Who benefits:

  • Active traders monitoring 10-20 active positions
  • Sector specialists tracking all stocks in an industry
  • Event traders watching companies near catalysts
  • Portfolio managers following current and potential holdings

  2. Click "Add Symbol"
  3. Type ticker
  4. Press Enter

Method 2: From Company Actions Tracker

  1. See interesting 8-K

Method 3: From Insider Trading Dashboard

Pro tip: Most efficient to add while browsing - one click from any feature.

Removing Symbols

In Watchlist Manager:

  1. Select watchlist
  2. Find symbol to remove
  3. Click X or delete icon next to symbol
  4. Confirm removal

When to remove:

  • Position closed (no longer own)
  • Thesis invalidated
  • Better opportunities elsewhere
  • List getting too large (>30 stocks hard to monitor)

Don't hesitate to trim - focused watchlists are more actionable.

Editing Watchlist Names

To rename a watchlist:

  1. In Watchlist Manager, find watchlist
  2. Click edit icon or watchlist name
  3. Type new name
  4. Save

Use descriptive names so you remember the purpose months later.

Deleting Watchlists

To delete an entire watchlist:

  1. In Watchlist Manager, select watchlist
  2. Click "Delete Watchlist" button
  3. Confirm deletion

Warning: This action cannot be undone. All symbols in the list are removed (but not from other watchlists if duplicated).

Alternative: Instead of deleting, consider archiving by renaming to "ARCHIVE - Name" and creating a fresh list.

Using the Watchlist Activity Tracker

The Watchlist Activity View

What it shows: A filtered feed of ONLY events for stocks in your active watchlist:

  • 8-K company actions
  • Insider Form 4 transactions
  • Opportunity score changes
  • All in chronological timeline

Why this matters: Instead of scanning thousands of filings daily, you see only what matters to YOUR stocks.

Selecting Active Watchlist

At top of Watchlist Activity page: Dropdown showing current watchlist

  • Click to see all your watchlists
  • Select different one to switch views
  • Bookmarks icon shows active selection

Only one watchlist active at a time.

Understanding the Stats Header

At top of page when watchlist is active:

Total Symbols: How many stocks in this watchlist

Symbols with Actions: How many have had recent activity (8-K or Form 4)

Total Actions: Count of all events for these stocks

Coverage %: Percentage of your watchlist with recent activity

  • High coverage (>70%) = Active period, lots happening
  • Medium coverage (40-70%) = Normal activity
  • Low coverage (<40%) = Quiet period

Use coverage to understand how eventful your stocks are.

The Activity Timeline

Two view modes:

Grid View:

  • Card-based layout
  • Each card shows one event (8-K or Form 4)
  • Compact or spacious density options
  • Best for quickly scanning many events

Timeline View:

  • Chronological vertical timeline
  • Events grouped by day
  • More context per event
  • Best for understanding sequence and clustering

Switch between views based on preference and task.

Filtering Watchlist Activity

Available filters:

By Impact (for 8-Ks):

  • High impact only
  • Medium impact
  • Low impact
  • All

By Time Period:

  • Last hour
  • Last 24 hours
  • Last week (default)
  • Last month

By Symbol: Select specific stocks within watchlist

  • Useful when watchlist has 20+ stocks
  • Drill into specific names

By Event Type:

  • Company actions (8-Ks) only
  • Insider transactions (Form 4s) only
  • All events (default)

Combine filters to narrow focus: Example: High impact 8-Ks only, last 24 hours → Today's major events

Symbols Without Recent Activity

Yellow banner shows: "X symbols have no recent actions: list of tickers"

What this means: These stocks in your watchlist haven't filed 8-Ks or Form 4s recently.

What to do:

  • Nothing - Silence can be fine, means no material events
  • Research why - Is the company in blackout period? Quiet operationally?
  • Consider removing - If months go by with no activity, might not be worth watching

This helps you know which stocks are "active" vs. dormant.

Advanced Features

Watchlist Comparison

Compare two watchlists side-by-side:

  • Which has more recent activity?
  • Which has more insider buying?
  • Where should you focus attention?

Use case: You have "Tech Stocks" and "Healthcare Stocks" watchlists. Compare to see which sector is more active this week.

Export Watchlist Data

Download current watchlist activity:

  1. View Watchlist Activity
  2. Apply desired filters
  3. Click "Export to CSV"
  4. Opens spreadsheet with all visible events

Use case: Build offline database of events for backtesting or deeper analysis.

Bulk Symbol Import

Add many symbols at once:

  1. Prepare CSV or paste list of tickers
  2. In Watchlist Manager, click "Bulk Add"
  3. Paste tickers (one per line or comma-separated)
  4. System validates and adds all at once

Use case: You have 30-stock sector index, want to monitor all quickly.

Watchlist Notes

Add notes to watchlists:

  • Remind yourself why you created this list
  • Track thesis for each list
  • Note review schedule

Example note: "Tech Growth - Monitor for pullbacks to buy. Target entry: 10% below 50-day MA."

Best Practices

Keep Lists Focused

Ideal watchlist size: 5-20 stocks

Why:

  • Too few (<5): Not enough diversification of ideas
  • Too many (>30): Too much noise, hard to track effectively

Solution if you want to track more: Create multiple focused lists rather than one huge list.

Review and Refresh Regularly

Weekly maintenance:

  • Remove stocks that no longer fit thesis
  • Add new ideas discovered during week
  • Reorder based on conviction (if platform allows)

Watchlists decay - what was relevant last month might not be now.

Use Descriptive Names

Bad: "List 1", "Main", "Stocks" Good: "Tech M&A Targets", "Post-Earnings Dips", "Insider Buying"

In 6 months, you'll forget what "List 1" was for. Descriptive names keep you organized.

Separate Current Positions from Targets

Two essential watchlists:

  1. Current Holdings - Stocks you own (portfolio management)
  2. Shopping List - Stocks you want to buy (opportunity scanning)

Different purposes, different monitoring styles:

  • Holdings: Watch for red flags (sell signals)
  • Targets: Watch for entry signals (buy setups)

Archive Don't Delete

Instead of deleting old watchlists: Rename to "ARCHIVE - Original Name" and stop monitoring.

Why: You might want to reference it later. Or market conditions change and the list becomes relevant again.

Common Questions

Q: How many watchlists can I create?

A: Free users can create up to 3 watchlists. Pro subscribers can create unlimited watchlists.

Q: Can I share a watchlist with others?

A: Currently watchlists are private to your account. Export feature allows you to share CSV of symbols.

Q: If I add a symbol to multiple watchlists, do I get duplicate alerts?

A: Alerts are per-watchlist. If you set alerts on two watchlists both containing AAPL, you'll get two alerts. Set alerts on one watchlist only to avoid duplicates.

Q: What happens to watchlist when I remove a symbol?

A: Symbol is removed from that watchlist only. If it's in other watchlists, it remains there. Historical activity data is not deleted.

Q: Can I see past activity for stocks no longer on my watchlist?

A: Yes. Use Company Actions or Insider Dashboard to search specific tickers directly, regardless of watchlist membership.

Q: What's the difference between Watchlist Manager and Watchlist Activity?

A: Manager is for organizing/editing lists. Activity is for monitoring events. Think: Manager = setup, Activity = daily use.

Pro Tips

Tip 1: Use Watchlists as Research Stages

Create pipeline:

  1. "Ideas" - Anything interesting (30-50 stocks)
  2. "Qualified" - Passed initial screening (15-20 stocks)
  3. "Ready to Buy" - Thesis developed, waiting for entry (5-10 stocks)
  4. "Active Positions" - Currently holding (5-15 stocks)

Stocks flow through stages as your conviction grows.

Tip 2: Theme-Based Lists for Event Trading

Create watchlists like:

  • "Earnings This Week"
  • "FDA Decisions Pending"
  • "Activist Targets"
  • "Restructuring Stories"

Each Monday, update these based on upcoming catalysts.

Tip 3: Mirror Your Portfolio

Keep one watchlist that exactly mirrors your brokerage account.

  • Every position you own
  • Update when you trade
  • Use for risk management and monitoring

Acts as second screen while trading.

Tip 4: Seasonal Rotation

Adjust watchlists by season:

  • Q4: Add retail stocks (holiday shopping)
  • January: Tax-loss bounce candidates
  • Summer: Low-volatility defensive names

Market behavior is seasonal, watchlists should adapt.

Tip 5: Set Calendar Reminders to Review

Put "Review Watchlists" on calendar:

  • Weekly: Quick trim/add session
  • Monthly: Full review of all lists
  • Quarterly: Archive old, create new

Maintenance keeps watchlists useful.
